GENERAL
Steel structures shall be made of structural steel, except where otherwise specified. Steel rivet shall be used for rivets only. Cast steel shall preferably be used for shoes, rockers and bearings. Forged steel shall be used for large pins, expansion rollers and other parts, as specified.Cast iron may be used only where specifically authorised.
The materials generally used in steel construction are described below. Special steels can beused provided that they are precisely specified and that their characteristics, such as yield stress, tensile strength, ductility and weldability, enable the present code to be put into application.
IDENTIFICATION
Certified report or manufacturer's certificates, properly correlated to the materials used, intended or other recognised identification markings on the product, made by the manufacturer of the steel material, fastener or other item to be used in fabrication or erection, shall serve to identify the material or item as to specification, type or grade.
Except as otherwise approved, structural steel not satisfactorily identified as to material specification shall not be used unless tested in an approved testing laboratory. The results of such testing, taking into account both mechanical and chemical properties, shall form the basis for classifying the steel as to specifications, and for the determination of the allowable stresses.
